Herd Information
Herd: Oakfern
Herd Position: Member

Details

Personality:  Shy/Reserved/Quiet/Odd/Skittish

Dis is strange even by Oakfern standards. He lacks the bitter edge and Napoleonic aggression of most of his peers; instead he tends to withdraw into the caves and himself, spending most of his time alone with only the water, the moon, and his own thoughts for company. He may come across as spacey in his encounters with others.

While his idiosyncrasies account for much of his personality, his penchant for solitude, which began at a young age, is thanks to his mother’s influence – or, more accurately, lack thereof. When his mother lost interest in raising him, switching from overbearing to indifferent, Dis had little choice but to become self-sufficient, and his mother’s sparse supervision gave him plenty of time and reason to wander the caves solo.

He never really learned to socialize well – not that he particularly cares or feels like he suffers for his solitude – and his speech tends to be formal, bordering on archaic. He would probably flee from most other fawnlings and submit to those larger and stronger than he. Dis does not seek to create confrontation or trouble unless he feels it is a matter of survival.

Though he is still too young to grapple life’s most compelling existential problems, he is a budding philosopher. All of that time spent alone, observing other fawnlings, has aged the colt beyond his years. His titchy, twitchy exterior obscures his intelligence, but he is a deep thinker. He also tends to rely on feeling, or his gut sense, to guide him when thinking alone won't yield an answer.

History:

Dis is the son of Captain of the Guard Taber the Scourge and Persephone, an ambitious young doe hampered in her quest for a guard position by two things: her diminutive size and her sex. Stymied by her lot in life, Dis’ mother projected her aspiration of Captainhood onto her son, hoping he would do her proud and live up to his father… but he was born early on the night of the New Moon, entering the world small and weak and in no way fit to trot in his father’s hoofprints. Consequently the fawn didn’t offer much of interest to his mother, whose care of him became perfunctory at best and left him the leeway to wander the Warren and develop on his own.

As a first-year fawn, Dis witnessed the death of the oracle Mindelan as well as the ascension of Nuala in late 758. Though those events were too complex to be fully understood by such a young fawn, both left a deep impression on the little fawnling’s mind.

Other:

- His paint is meant to be reminiscent of the night sky, a way to bring him closer to Gealach

Plans:

- Find a big bruiser of a buddy to help him survive and support him; Dis needs a steadfast companion he can turn to
- Stir up trouble in the Oakfern caverns, probably by disagreeing with the king and/or the herd’s way of life. (What does Gealach really want, anyway?)
-  Possibly spend some quality time above ground, especially so if it involves some kind of epic journey or soul-searching
- Become good at magic (but remain a twiggy little thing who sucks at anything physical)
- Find a level-headed mentor

Oakfern caverns

Drops of water falling from ever-growing stalactites formed the steady pulse of the caves, a constant but languid beat in the darkness. In these far reaches of the tunnels, in the fingers that stretched away from the heart of the Warren and twisted themselves deep into the surrounding cliffs and hills, it was the only sound that punctuated the still, cool blackness. Closer to the Moonpool, the damp air of the caves stirred alive with the murmurs and whispers of the Oakfern herd, but out here in the labyrinthine side passages few fawnlings bothered to traverse, there was only silence. Silence and drops of water.

Dis liked the silence.

It wasn’t that he disliked other fawnlings per se. The yearling had great respect for his kind, impressed as he was by the tales of his people’s gods and history. The essence of fawnlings – the idea of fawnlings – was a grand thing to him. But Dis himself, undersized and timid and easily dominated by his peers, was no grand thing, and he knew it. He knew it, accepted it, and, resigned, he drifted apart from other Oakferns like a moon in distant orbit.

He began to explore these outermost caves well before he reached his first year. He was compelled not by a thirst for adventure but by a lack of anything better to do. Most fawns his age would still be trotting close to their mothers' sides, but Dis’ mother Persephone had made it clear that she had little interest in mentoring him beyond what was necessary to ensure his basic survival. Without her watchful eyes to keep him near, he started to range into the side passages: first the main arteries surrounding the Moonpool; then the byways branching off of them; and finally the small, tortuous runs that fanned out through the entirety of Oakfern and dissuaded most interlopers from attempting to enter the kingdom. This was the only area he’d found where his small size served him well: it allowed him to squeeze through tight passages that otherwise excluded larger fawnlings.

It was dark in these tunnels, of course. It was dark everywhere in the caverns of Oakfern, beneath the mountains as they were; but out here in the rarely-wandered tributaries it was blackest of all, with little luminous moss and few breaks in the ceiling to provide illumination. Dis’ star-painted coat cast enough faint blue light to allow him to carefully pick his way forward, and where his vision failed, his other senses, so finely honed by a lifetime underground, picked up the slack.  His ears turned this way and that, as alert and wary as a hare’s, though there was little to hear except the sighing of the caves and the dripping of the water that leached down, down, down through the earth and the mountains and the stone into the caverns.

The sound of water calmed him, and when he listened to it, he could sense some of his perpetual tenseness ebb from his body. Oftentimes Dis found himself feeling like he was one of his mother’s rabbits, moving nervously through life under the eyes of a thousand invisible predators. Even in the presence of other Oakferns, in the midst of the herd when they convened at the Moonpool, he could feel an undefined danger prowling around the edges of his mind. He first felt it when he saw the Oracle Mindelan slain in battle with King Nazam some months ago, and it seemed to worsen with each bleating Oathbreaker pulled to a drowning death. He was too young to put words to this sensation or to cogently voice his thoughts, but he knew what he felt, and the air around the Moonpool felt dangerous. So Dis turned to water and found solace in its steady rhythms. He breathed the moist air and listened to the liquid pulse of the caves.

There was only one thing he dearly missed in these dark passages, so far away from the Moonpool: he missed his other enduring source of comfort, the moon. The miles of rock between him and the open air felt like so much cold emptiness. The dark fawn often longed to meet Gealach’s gaze and see the night sky – both such rare things underground. So he searched for a way.

As Dis crept onward, he felt a minute change in the air. A slight movement, the lightest touch of a breeze, a coolness that broke through the dank, stagnant atmosphere of the cave. He was headed the right way, and he pressed forward quickly now. He felt the stone walls of the tunnel brushing at his flank, but he did not care; the passage narrowed; he felt again the fresh breeze, and this time a hint of salt in the air; and, clamoring over rocks and into a tight squeeze, he wriggled forward determinedly.

With one final push, Dis plopped out of the cave and onto a stony ledge. Shaking himself, he rose onto his thin legs and glanced about. Before him stretched the sea, miles of blackness melding with the distant horizon. Above him, Gealach’s eye, wide open, cast a silvery light, and stars twinkled in the night sky. Below him, several meters down in the rocky tidal zone, the waves crashed against the cliffs.  He stared at the water where it ran aground into the rocks. Tiny flecks of light, like a thousand Lilliputian stars, burst into life and faded with each wave’s crash.

The great power of the waves thrummed in his ears, and Gealach, unblinking, looked down on him from on high. Dis closed his eyes and let the power of the scene envelope him and pull away his fears. Sinking slowly to the ground and tucking his legs beneath him, he nestled into the still-warm rocks, contented. He would rest here tonight, under the moon, surrounded by stars.

The stars in the water. The stars in his fur. The stars in the sky.
